The Spartan fits the gap in Ukrainian army between unarmored trucks and 8x8 full-size APS, such as the BTR-3 or BTR-4. It's true to say that these armored vehicles were pressed into service due to ongoing military conflict in the Eastern Ukraine. KrAZ Spartan is a light APC produced Ukrainian KrAZ holding under license from the Streit Group. It is based on Ford F-550 pickup truck chassis and uses Ford 6.7-liter V8 turbocharged diesel engine, developing 400 hp. Basically it the first case in the history of Ukrainian weapons that military vehicle is developed from a civil one. Having its own developments in the class of light APCs (at least Dozor-B and Kozak) Ukraine has chosen Spartan due to the "ready-to-use" chassis that can guarantee very short "time to market" under circumstances of the ongoing war against Russia. At the time Spartan was introduced Ukraine already had lost a large number of their armored vehicles in the East. Due to the lack of readily available armored vehicles it was pressed into service with Ukrainian armed forces.
The vehicle has conventional layout with the engine in the front part, drivers compartment in the middle and troops compartment in the rear. Troops can enter and leave the vehicle via side- or rear doors. The Spartan accommodates driver, gunner and 10 troops. There are some firing ports and associated vision blocks provided for the troops to fire their individual weapons. Spartan has welded hull, made of steel armor plates arranged at an angle. Armor protection meets CEN Level BR6 standard and provides protection against ammunition 7,62 × 51mm NATO from a distance of 10 meters. Floor of the vehicle withstands grenade blasts.
Spartans that are in force in National Guard of Ukraine are equipped with Sarmat remotely controlled module that includes 12.7-mm machine gun and 4 Ukrainian Korsar anti-tank guided missiles. Vehicles that are used by Ukrainian army are equipped by heavy 12.7-mm machineguns K-12.7.
The short period of Spartans usage in anti-terrorist operation revealed a range of defects and deficiencies of the new APC. The major deficiency is that standard F-550s suspension does not cope with increased weight of the armored vehicle and it resulted numerous breakdowns.
