    AS 'Val'

AS 'Val'AS "Val» is a gas-operated selective fire weapon, fitted with integral silencer. It is designed on the basis of automated gas-trap assembly with long stroke gas piston. The gas piston is located above the barrel and is rigidly attached to the slide frame. Receiver is produced from milled steel. This increases increases rigidity and durability of the rifle but on the other hand increases its weight and cost of production. Steel burnishing is applied to protect all the steel-made mechanisms against corrosion. There are four rows of inclined holes in the walls of the barrel, ensuring that propellant gases are released evenly.

Val is fed from detachable box-type 9 x 39 mm cartridge, holding 20 rounds. 20 rounds magazines from VSS “Vintorez” could be also used. The rifle uses the SP-5 and SP-6 subsonic ammunition. Primary is the SP-6 armor piercing round. It has a hardened steel penetrator. It penetrates 6 mm steel plate at a range of 200 m and 2 mm steel plate at a range of 500 m. This round can defeat most military body armors at ranges of 300-400 meters. The SP-5 is a ball round, fitted with heavy bullet. The actual effective range of the AS Val is limited to 200-300 meters due to the shaped trajectory of subsonic bullets.

After disassembling all main components (receiver with the barrel, automatic, trigger and forearm, muffler with sights, butt) rifle could be carried in a special case along with the sights and shops. Assembly takes from 30 to 60 seconds, depending on qualification of the shooter. Despite of all its advantages use of the rifle is a bit limited as bayonet or underbarrel grenade launcher could not be installed.
AS "Val" and VSS "Vintorez" are unified by 70%, that has a positive impact on the production and functioning of these firearms. The rifle is produced since 1987 and is in service with Russian Special Forces only.AS 'Val'A group of people armed with AS "Val" rifles was noticed walking across Lugansk downtown in mid-January 2015 (there is a video of one of the locals that was shared via internet). A couple of weeks later the rifle was used by one of pro-Russian separatists (thought to be Russian former special forces officer) in battle near Sanzharovka (village near Artemovsk, Donetsk Region).
