In summer of 2005 a drop-side truck tractor KAMAZ-6560 (8x8) was exhibited on the 9th Moscow International Motor Show (MIMS), but its premiere was not held in Russia. Kama’s car factory has prepared “completely new cars 65224 and 6560 − drop-side truck tractors with increased weight and improved driving characteristics, they were first equipped with the 400-hp diesel engine”, for the international exhibition of arms and military equipment “IDEX-2005", which was held in the capital of the United Arab Emirates from the 12-th up to the 17-th of February.
KAMAZ-6560 with capacity of 20 tons owes its origin to the Tula’s Instrument Design Bureau (IDB). At that time IDB was searching for the chassis for “Pantsir-S1”, produced by the request of UAE ADMGS 96K6 ( the chassis’ KAMAZ-63501 “Mustang”, carrying capacity of 14 tons, had been considered too weak for that purposes).
It should also be noted that the KAMAZ-6560 creation actually gave thumbs up to the development of self-propelled gun (SPG) with wheeled chassis. The available chassis (before the “Tornado”) were not suitable for the SPG base with the characteristics close to the level of the new “Koalitsiya-SV-KSh”. As noted KAMAZ-6560 has high capacity allowing it to use the chassis as the basis for a new fighting-fit truck.
The car’s design is completely original. All of its major components, assemblies, systems have been designed for using on the heavy-duty vehicles (a load on the first and second axles is 8830, a maximum load on the rear truck is 6020 kg). First of all this applies to the engine, gearbox, axle, front axle, suspension and frame.
The antiroll bar, the blocking of cross-axle differentials provide greater stability of KamAZ-6560 during cornering and its off-road capability when operating in heavy traffic conditions; solid amplifiers for frame’s spar increases the reliability of this important vehicle’s integral unit significantly.
KAMAZ-6560 is equipped with a so-called “long-stroke” (diameter and stroke − 120x130 mm) turbocharged engine KAMAZ-740.50-400 (400 hp) with intermediate charge-air intercooler and improved power characteristics. The car’s transmission is ZF 6HP 602, hydra-mechanical, six-speed with automatic control; ratios: top gear − 0.83, the lowest − 5.6. The transfer case − Steyr VG 2000/300, two-step; ratios: top gear − 0.89, the lowest − 1.536. There is a lockable inter-axle differential in transmission. Gear ratio of final drive − 6.88.
Electrical equipment: power − 24 V; batteries − 2 × 12/190 V/ah; generator − 28/2000 V/ W. Pneumatic brakes: drum’s diameter − 400 mm; brake linings’ width −180 mm; the total area of the brake linings − 9600 cm². Located above the engine sleeper cab has adjustable steering column and driver's seat.
We did not find any documented evidence of KAMAZ-6560 involvement in the military conflict in eastern Ukraine despite of the fact that couple of bloggers were claiming at least the fact of inclusion of these vehices to Russian humanitarian convoys.
